Today I want to look at style and design through a film lens. My brother Garret Noel has written, directed and stars in a beautiful film Wayward Pilgrim. It is a touching story of father Rusty McCaan trying to turn his life around for his four-year-old daughter, whom he has never known. That is only a fraction of what Rusty is dealing with in this multi faceted film. Giving the story even more soul is the soundtrack. The music was produced by John Carter Cash, son of the beloved Johnny and June. The music helps you to feel the lives of the films characters through songs by the greatest country, blues and soul artists of our time. You should also be on the look out for Terin James in the role of Maria and her original songs on the soundtrack.

Before and After Cane Barrel Chairs

I love the gratification that comes from finding a diamond in the rough. I love clients who will go on a hunt with me. While shopping with a client I spotted these old cane back barrel chairs. We found them at one of my favorite consignment shops Again and Again. I had them painted in a distressed finish at a local Dallas furniture boutique Uptown Country. I upholstered them professionally in fabrics that dressed them up even better then their glory day. The finish and fabrics accommodate the vintage chic style of the living space. Aaaaw behold the power of upholstery and paint! This is what I call a custom design without a custom price tag. Xo ~ Annie

Layered Rug Look

The layered rug look is really growing on me. I think it is a great way to add many textures and colors to warm up a space. There have been many times I have fallen in love with a rug that only comes in 8x10 when my client actually needs a 9x12. There has also been many times when the budget allows for an 8 10 and not it's spendy sister 9x12. A great way to solve this sizing & budget issue is by layering the smaller patterned rug with a larger more natural/neutral rug. You just need to make sure the larger bottom rug will not compete with the patterned rug on top. I have also seen the layered look done with animal hides to give you more floor coverage. Below are some inspiring layered images to help you achieve this look. I think layered rugs are just as wonderful as the "Rachel layered" cut once was. Xo ~ Annie

Pouf Perfect!

I have always been a fan of the Moroccan poufs you see all over. It is such a great way to add a pop of color to a room. Right now I am really in love with West Elm's current pouf options. Pretty Lil Pumpkins

My favorite part of Halloween is seeing all the pretty lil pumpkins everywhere. People get so creative with their pumpkin designs and are carving them less less these days. Fearless Chevron Floors

I am so happy to see the chevron trend is here to stay. In fact as the trend grows people are becoming more fearless with it. Forget adding just an accent pillow or pair of drapery panels, be bold and chevron the floor. Fashion legends like the Missoni Family have set the stage in chevron and made it a closet staple. It is Jonathan Adler and Kelly Wearstler that have made it a bold statement in interiors. Madeline Weinrib has also blessed us with her beautiful chevron textiles that make me so happy. With chevron popping up everywhere I think it's safe to say it has become a classic. Go for it and zig zag that powder bath, kitchen or office....just make sure you tape the pattern first and don't try and freestyle this one. Happy Decorating! xo ~ Annie

MYO Hanky Wall Decor

One of my favorite things in my daughters nursery is the "Sweet Dreams" hanky wall decor I made. It was so easy to make and became the focal point of the room. I think this hanky wall decor could also look great in a home spun boutique or women's home office. Here is how to make your own hanky wall decor.

1. Decide what your hankies will say. I chose "Sweet Dreams", because it is hanging over my daughters crib. I think it would be really great in a boutique or home office spelling your business name.

2. Use old handkerchief's you have or purchase some on Etsy.com like I did.

3. Purchase iron or stick on monogram letters from JoAnne's, Michael's or your local craft store. Apply the letters evenly on each hanky.

4. Hang the hankies evenly on string/twine using clothes pins. I found fun polka dot clothes pins at one of my favorite shops Gypsy Wagon. You could paint some yourself if you want to give it that extra detail.

5. Marvel and enjoy your hanky masterpiece.

Diaper Changing in Style!

One of my favorite things to do is re-use and add detail to furniture and window treatments. You can re-use things by making small modifications and adding design details. Today I will show you how to turn a vanity into a changing table. I will also show you how to add design detail to a window valance and crib skirt. First we will start with turning a vanity into a changing table.

Changing Table

This is the antique vanity that was my mothers and mine when we were little girls. I want my daughter Nora to also have this vanity in her room to carry on the tradition. At three months she is not ready to use a vanity just yet and I don't have a spot in our home. I thought why not use it now by turning it into a changing table. Here is how I did it!

Items you will need:
- Vanity
- Staple Gun
- Heavy Duty Velcro
- 7" Bed Lifts - Can be found at Bed Bath and Beyond
- Plywood Board - Cut to the length and width of vanity top
- Cotton Batting
- Oil Cloth
- Diaper Changing Pad
- 3-4 Ready Made Window Valances
- Coordinating Crib Skirt

Step 1 Changing Table Top

Purchase and cut a plywood board to the length and width of your vanity top. If you are not handy with a saw visit Home Depot and they will cut it to your desired size at no cost.

Step 2 Upholster the Top

Purchase a scrubbable and water proof fabric such as a oil cloth or vinyl. I selected a retro pink floral at one of my favorite local stores Gypsy Wagon. You will also need to purchase cotton batting from your local craft supply store. The batting will soften the changing table top. Staple gun the batting neatly on the plywood board then staple the oil cloth over the batting. Attach the top with heavy duty Velcro in each corner of the top. Secure your changing table pad and you have just completed the top portion of your table.

Step 3 Lift the Vanity to Changing Height

Purchase 7" bed lifts from Bed Bath and Beyond to lift the vanity making it close to 32" in height. Get the help of two strong people to help you place the lifts under the vanity legs.

Step 4 Skirt the Vanity

Purchase three ready made window valances in the fabric of your choice and a tension rod to fit the vanity opening width. You will need enough valances to wrap around the bottom of the vanity and cover the upper opening of the vanity. You may also order a valance for the window and coordinating crib skirt.

Step 5 Add Ribbon and Trim Detail

Visit your local fabric store and select fun ribbon and trims. Stitch them in rows onto the vanity skirts/valances to give it a custom look. Add cotton eyelet trim to the bottom of the valance to get the desired length and cover the bed lifts. Be sure to get enough ribbon to add onto your coordinating bed skirt and window valance (that is being used on the window). After sewing on your trim and ribbon cut your valances into 4 separate pieces. One for the bottom front skirt, two for the sides and one small skirt for the upper opening of the vanity. Sew the ends of each section to give it a finished look. Attach the bottom skirt with Velcro and the top skirt with the tension rod.

Step 6 Add Accessories and Diaper Supplies

Add accessories for your baby to look at like a colorful fabric banner hanging on the mirror. Nora loves to stand and try and reach her banner. She also loves looking in the mirror and wonders who that cool baby is looking at her. Fill the drawers with diaper changing supplies. I even placed a basket in the opening to store diapers. Plug in your diaper wipe warmer and you are ready for diaper changing in the most stylish way.

Step 7 Enjoy Changing Diapers!

Nora's Nursery

I have been getting lots of requests to show Nora's Nursery. Well here is the big reveal!

While in the "nesting" stage of my pregnancy I was very inspired. I mean I was "Sleeping with the Enemy" organized in a disturbing way. I had to have every picture hung and onesie washed. I thought once the baby arrived I would not have time to do anything (kind of became true). I wanted to create a space that was whimsical, vintage and modern all at the same time. I considered avoiding pink on the walls, but that just didn't feel right. In the coming weeks I will show you how I created furniture and accessories for the room. I think you will be surprised how you do not need to spend a fortune to create a nursery.

So... here it is Nora's boudoir! I just had to do before and after photos, I am such a sucker for that. Thanks to my talented friend Laura Squire of Ra-foto.co m the after photos look lovely!

School Project Blooms Real Life Restaurant

When I was in design school I would dream of my class projects becoming real life projects. While reading a tweet from PSFK I was stopped in my tracks by this amazing school project turned real life restaurant. Designed by University of Pennsylvania School of Design students (via help from their professors), they designed a restaurant that has now literally bloomed into real life in Harajuku Tokyo. It is an architectural work of art to say the least! The restaurant looks like a blooming bouquet of flowers and schools of fish. The sake bar and lounge are something from another planet. This restaurant serves not just cuisine, but a visual fantasy! How I wish I could have a reservation this weekend. ~xo~ Annie

Gifts for Dad

Fathers Day can be a gift giving challenge. After all when my Dad needs something he just usually goes and gets it. I think that is why Dad's end up with the ultimate worst holiday gifts like socks and another coffee mug. I try to find those items he won't find for himself. I think how my Dad loves riding his bike from Redondo Beach to Manhattan Beach in a comfortable pair of Vans while listening to some Jim Croce. He can always use a new shirt or a cool watch. I don't think I could go wrong getting him any photography of an old Austin Healey to admire in his office. Save Dad the socks and try to come up with something more personal this year. Vintage Mix

I love the idea of sipping iced tea in these vintage round back chairs on a lanai or garden room.

A great design always has a little vintage in the mix. It's all about mixing the new with the old and the traditional with the modern to create a nice balance. It may be as simple as adding a pair of antique Asian lamps or a great mid-century modern chair. As long as you feel the piece is special and it makes you smile find a way to incorporate it into your space. Sometimes I can design an entire room starting with a single piece of furniture for inspiration. Find that piece that inspires you and just go with it. ~xo~ Annie

Dallas Modern MyDiab Design

Here is the latest Dallas design I completed last week. Like I always say each MyDiab client is different from the next. I have never had two designs that are alike. It is not often that a Dallas client wants to go ultra modern, so I was very happy when I received this design mission. The mission was to create a family room that accommodates entertaining as well as relaxing in front of the TV or reading. The style needed to be European modern in light and soothing fabrics. The unique shape of the space allowed us to create two separate seating areas. One area was for entertaining and sitting near the fireplace. The second was for curling up on the sofa. I gave the client two furniture plan options that allowe them to chooser their favorite. I selected all light upholstery fabrics and added interest with texture. Color was added with spa toned accent pillows and artwork. We created more interest on the firplace by selectng a bamboo mosaic blend tile. Modern spaces can become very cold, but I think with this design we achieved a calming and relaxing space to live in. ~xo~ Annie

I stumbled on the Etsy shop Jaime Mancilla while searching for fabric garland to hang in a child's bedroom design (fabric garland makes me oh so happy). The site made me want to throw a home spun style birthday bash or shower for someone. Every item just made me smile from the cake bunting decoration to the vintage crochet hangers. Children's Bedroom Design Brooklyn, NY

It is not often enough I get to design children's bedrooms, so I was very excited when this project arrived in my email. Designing children's rooms allows me to be a kid all over again. This recent design was for a brother and sister in Brooklyn, NY. They live in a temporary apartment while their family is looking for a home to buy with more space. The design mission was to create a room for both a 3 year old boy and his little 1 year old sis. They already had the furniture, so I just had to make it all work together in the space. I had to be careful to not make the room too boyish or too girly. I achieved this by going with area rug and artwork options that will speak to both boys and girls. Both kiddos love to read books with their parents, so I created a cozy reading corner. I emphasized the reading corner with fabric party garland found on Etsy and a cozy sheep skin rug to lounge on. I think it is a must to display children's artwork on the walls. I selected mismatched frames from West Elm to collage and display their masterpieces. I can't wait to get another children's room design, so please keep them coming! I hope these kids have as much fun playing in this room as I did. ~xo~ Annie

Outdoor furniture has come a long way from your Mommas teak chairs. Don't get me wrong I love the charm of weathered teak furniture. I just dream of someday having outdoor furniture that is on another level. It would be so fun to crawl into a Dedon Nestrest or doze off in Hastens plaid hammock. I can see myself daydreaming away with a good book and cold lemonade. I think there is also something to be said about being able to relax more if your sitting on 100% recycled furniture such as Loll's. You can relax knowing you have done your part for mother earth. I have decided in my next home I will be finding a spot for at least a Nestrest to dwell inside. What could be a cozier way to spend an afternoon than in your own outdoor nest!? Fun Food Storage

I am still in full Spring cleaning mode at my house. Every weekend I find a cabinet, closet or drawer to clean out. I get such a thrill from purging of stuff and unloading donations at Salvation Army. Organizing addiction has become a real problem for me I may need intervention. Sometimes I just stand and stare at the closet that is freshly organized until my husband asks me what I'm doing. That is why I flipped when I saw the food storage and kitchen section at seltzerstudios.com. I would love to open my fridge to brightly colored food storage containers. Giant Design Inspiration

The Dallas Film Festival is going on right now and it's a blast. It is so fun to have such a wide variety of films to go see. Last night I had a girls night with my fun sister-in-law. We went to a special screening of the old classic movie Giant. It stars the greats like Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. It is an essential Texas movie, so it was fitting to watch it at the historic Texas Theater (where they captured Oswald..spooky). They have maintained a lot of the theaters original character and charm. It was fun to watch the movie just as they would have in 1956 when Giant arrived in theaters. It is a lovely film and it inspired me to put together a design round up. If you feel like it's a movie weekend I recommend renting it and enjoying some Texas iced tea and BBQ. Something about Spring has me thinking of chintz. I think chintz gets a bad wrap often, because it has been overdosed. San Fran Bay Area Design!

Last week I was in New York City for an eclectic living room design. This week I traveled to the lovely town of Redwood City near the San Fran Bay area. Well not really traveled, but via the internet I did. The design mission was to create a master bedroom that was traditional in style with modern and flea market twists. I selected Dwell Studio peacock bedding for a modern play on a traditional pattern. I went with a classic nail head upholstered bed, because it will be timeless. The dresser and nightstands are traditional yet clean lined and slightly modern in style. The wood finishes have a gray rustic wash giving them a flea market feel. Adding to the flea market touches is the blue garden stool, Moroccan pouf and dictionary art work. Oh how the MyDiab clients have great taste making my job once again too much fun. Today I just found the BootsNGus Etsy shop. I am loving their recycled mason jar chandeliers! I especially love the one in Spring pastel jar colors. Something about these chandeliers takes me back to being a kid and catching a firefly in a jar during the summer. It just gives me that warm fuzzy homey feeling. Italian Inspiration

Awhile ago I grew very tired of the Tuscan decorating people were doing in their homes. I got aggravated when clients would say I like the Tuscan look. I think because it is so often done poorly with a bad faux finish and Italian themed chochkees from a local Homegoods store. I now am changing my tune thanks to a featured Italian home in Elle Decor. I think I could now see myself in an authentic Italian home. I love the eclectic mix of carved antiques, textured fabrics, colorful rugs, rusty lanterns and the worn out leather sofa. This home just speaks to me like a double scoop of gelato. I hope this home inspires people to make their Tuscan style homes a bit more authentic. Italian design is so much more than hanging a painting of a bottle of wine on the wall that has been sponge painted (yikes did I just say sponge paint). Have a great weekend everyone. ~xo~ Annie

Remembering Liz

When I was a teenager I had Andy Warhol's Liz Taylor hanging in my bedroom. It now hangs in my bathroom next to my other favorite style icon Grace Kelly. When I heard the news that Liz had passed I looked at the Warhol in a new perspective. Liz was the definition of a movie star. When someone says diamonds I think of Liz saying "diamonds are forever". She had beauty, grace, charm and amazing talent. I will forever picture Cleopatra to be Liz even if it's during a seriouse Egyptian history lesson. I may have to move Liz away from Grace Kelly in the bathroom, I don't think she would like to share the spotlight. As you can see in the room below your eyes go right to Liz hanging on the wall. MyDiab New York Design!

Last week I had a lot of fun working on a New York City living room design. The client wanted to keep their existing furniture and give it an update by reupholstering. Their style was eclectic with a touch of whimsical. They were not afraid to go bold with fabric patterns and color. I created 3 different color palettes so they didn't feel limited on fabric choices.

I created 3 different color palettes mostly in the jewel tone family. The fabric patterns are Asian inspired to go with some of their Asian antiques in the room. This also adds to the eclectic feel.

I kept the window treatment simple so it would not compete with the yellow walls and panels of grasscloth. The client has a great fireplace with bookcases. I created a drawing to help them stage and organize the shelves. I also included some inspiration photos of bookcases to try and copy.

The client received large samples of fabric in addition to small swatches on the design boards. I also included photos of the fabrics in their shopping list. This will give them an idea of the full scale fabric pattern.

I think these bursts of color and pattern will give their lovely home a nice update. I hope they enjoy the design as much as I enjoyed creating it. ~xo~ Annie

This sofa makes me oh so happy. It was designed by Josef Frank in the mid-1930's. I had no idea they got this elaborate with upholstery in the 1930's, but I love it. Yesterday I stopped into Cost Plus World Market to look at rugs. I was so surprised to see some of the new furniture styles they offer. I have always thought of World Market as only having Asian style furniture with dark wood finishes. They have added some great industrial style pieces as well as a touch of modern classic. Visit their website or a local store and you will be pleasantly surprised with the new choices. You just have to love World Market. In this months issue of Dwell a pair of crafty designers show you how to budget with style. My favorite philosophy in the article is mixing and matching dining chairs. You can collect designer dining chairs at your own pace and no two need to be alike. The best part is you can enjoy all different designs and not limit yourself to just one. I love this idea and am going to try it in my own home. The hardest thing about being a designer is picking your favorite chair. Lesson learned try not to be so matchy matchy. ~xo~ Annie

I found a great mid-century modern shop on Etsy called The Vintage Supply Co. The thing I love about mid-century furniture and accessories is that a dash of it will fit in almost any style. You don't have to have a completely modern house to add a few mid-century pieces. Incorporate pieces in small doses with a lamp, accent chair or piece of art. The Vintage Supply Co. had a lot of fun yellow, black and white pieces which inspired me to create the bold color palette below. It is kind of bee hive chic for spring. I am flipping over this weeks Before & After post on Design*Sponge. What really caught my eye was the creative use of vintage handkerchiefs clipped on string with laundry pins. This is such a lovely and feminine way to spell out your business name on a wall. I think this could be especially adorable in a little girls room spelling out "Sweet Dreams". To create the look visit Etsy.com for the handkerchiefs, buy string, laundry pins and voila! Slide Around Your Home

The inner child in me came out when I saw the Houses with Slides article on flavorwire.com. It takes me back to when I would design spaces in my head as a kid. I use to want the loft that Tom Hanks had in Big. I would dream of having a train to ride around my home like Rick Schroder on the 80's TV show Silver Spoons. Well now I want to add to my fun house list a slide. Why take the stairs when you can get there faster via slide. I have decided someday I will have a dining table that converts into a ping pong table and now a slide to take me from up to down. Your never too old to slide around the house. MyDiab Master Bedroom Design

I just mailed an eclectic Master Bedroom design to a MyDiab client in Cardiff By The Sea, CA. I selected soft grey walls with accent walls in a light grass cloth to bring in texture. The bedding is crip hotel white with a red contrast stitch, red cashmere throw blanket and bold colored accent pillows for that pop. Also giving the space bursts of color will be the artwork and the red and white chevron rug. I think this room will be a nice retreat and relaxing space at the end of a long day. ~xo~ Annie

I just caught a glimpse of this months Vogue Australia and was more than delighted at what I saw. It's a fiesta of bold colors, textured fabrics and the best part big hats. Silhouette and Butterfly Trend

I love new and different artwork trends. I am really drawn to the silhouette and butterfly trend I keep seeing. These looks have a strong presence when an entire wall or small space is designated for a grouping (see photos below). I could even see mixing a little silhouette with butterfly being a wall stunner. This could really be an affordable art option if you printed the silhouette's on your home computer and framed them yourself. If you don't want to splurge on real butterflies you can always pick up the faux version at your local craft store and put them in a frame. I think I am going to do this in a bathroom, I will let you know how it turns out! ~xo~ Annie

Oscar Inspiration

I love watching the Oscars every year. I find myself getting board with the award show itself at times, but the dresses oh my the dresses. Oscar night is seeing fashion at it's best and last night was amazing. My absolute favorite of the evening would have to be Hailee Steinfeld's ensemble. Not only is she adorable, but her dress was a perfect age appropriate fit. I loved the length, the color, the hair you name it. This dress took Hailee far away from her look in True Grit. She herself sketched the dress and had Marchesa make it for her. Wouldn't that be fun to be able to send Marchesa sketches of a dress?! That may be almost as incredible as being nominated for an Oscar. Hailee's dress inspired me to round up some playful and blush style items. Enjoy with some champagne! ~xo~ Annie

I've had plenty of rental places in my day and it has it's pros and cons. On one hand it keeps you somewhat commitment free. A one year lease can be easier to swallow than a mortgage payment sometimes. On the other hand owning your home gives you the freedom to paint, wallpaper, tile and the sky is the limit. Thanks to new beautiful styles of peel and stick wallpapers you too can make your rental more personal in style. Gone are the days of saying I can't wallpaper my rental. I just received a Master Bedroom MyDiab project. Bedrooms are one of my favorite rooms to design. I love creating a relaxing retreat for people. Designing Bedrooms always makes me want to revamp my own, but we won't go there. Today I started looking for inspiration photos to get my creative wheels turning. I am looking at wall colors, linens, nigh stands you name it. There are so many brillant ideas out there. I think one of my favorite things about Valentine's Day is the sweets. I usually feel like baking or skip that jut eating baked goods. Of course whatever you bake or eat needs to be in the shape of a heart or it does not count. I want to try baking something different this year, so I visited Martha Stewarts site for ideas. Nifty Bike Shelf

I know it is a little early to break out our bikes. Most of us are still buried in snow and in my case covered in ice. Thankfully, I heard next week is going to warm up for most of us. This soon to be warmer temp has got me thinking about bike weather. If you live in an apartment it can be tricky to store your bike. You worry about someone stealing it on the street, so most people prefer to bring it inside with them. It usually ends up being shoved in the corner awkwardly. Vertical Blinds That Don't Suck

The moment I see vertical blinds I want to rip them down immediately and replace with a better option. I think that is because the verticals I am usually seeing are old and have a few slats falling out. The truth is sometimes vertical blinds are the best option for a window, especially a sliding glass door. Thanks to The Shade Store gone are the days of those not so pleasant vertical blinds. They have beautiful options available in many colors and textures. They will even mail you free samples, which I love. They have changed my outlook on vertical blinds completely. Get Cozy In Cold

Alright, so we are all sick and tired of the ice, snow and cold. I really shouldn't even complain winter just arrived really this week in Dallas. It showed up just in time for the Super Bowl. I admit I am getting a little stir crazy and need to find ways to cozy up in the cold. I am grabbing a warm blanket, filling my mug with cocoa, burning a fire in the fire place and putting on my wool slippers. After all it's not everyday that life gets to slow down a bit. I am going to try and take full advantage. Then when I can't chill anymore I will probably go clean my closet and organize a drawer or two until the roads are clear. Viva Italia!

We are wrapping up our Euro style trip in lovely Italy! The past few weeks we have been finding our style in London and France. Now we arrive at my favorite destination Italy! The people are so kind and oh my the food! There are so many ancient ruins and art that you begin to take it for granted. We caught ourselves saying things like, "Oh there's another Michelangelo". When I was in Rome I imagined Audrey in "Roman Holiday" cruising around on her vespa. While driving in Tuscany I felt like we were living in a painting. Room With A View

I have been thinking about hotel rooms with great views lately. Maybe it's because spring break is around the corner. Maybe it's because it's been a little chilly in Dallas lately. Maybe it's beacause every time I turn on the news it looks like someone is trying to shovel out their car or even their house. Well whatever the reason may be I just enjoy looking at beautifully designed hotel rooms. Especially, room designs that center around a killer view. Here are some lovely rooms to inspire you to get out of the cold and snow this spring break. Save those pennies the next few month and ship yourself to South Beach, Santa Monica, Santorini, Bali or St. Lucia. Otherwise, just enjoy these photos and visit a spa, local hotel, relax by a warm fire or soak in a hot bath. Find some way to getaway.

My Dream Wearstler Office
